We are the UK's only doctor-led thread vein (or 'spider vein') removal specialists. Led by clinical evidence and a rigorous care pathway, we have perfected thread vein treatments that are not just effective, but designed to deliver the best outcome and highest standards of care to our patients

Having thread or spider veins is a common condition that profoundly affects wellbeing, and can become acutely troubling. Too often these veins are left untreated, or - sometimes worse still - given over to a non-specialist clinic to treat

By contrast, the UK Vein Clinic is run by leading vascular surgeons and scientists. Our specialist thread vein doctors and technicians are led by Dr Peter Finigan, who designed our thread vein care pathway, and is Medical Director at Dr Newmans Clinic - which pioneered these treatments in the UK

Peter and his team are experts in safe and non-invasive treatment techniques, and equipment designed specifically to carefully remove thread veins. We do not use lasers in any of our treatments

Treating facial thread veins

Years of experience and thousands of successful procedures have shown us that thread veins of all sizes - including general facial veins, veins which surround or appear in the nose, and veins associated with rosacea - can be treated with confidence using the 'Veinwave' technique

Veinwave (or 'Thermavein') is a form of 'thermal coagulation', where a precisely targeted source of heat is used to seal, collapse, and gently remove your thread veins. It’s highly effective, and delivers far better outcomes than laser treatments (which risk discolouring or damaging your skin)

What to expect

You'll meet a specialist doctor at our London thread vein treatment clinic for an initial consultation. This usually lasts around 30 minutes. Your doctor will make sure you fully understand your treatment options

If treatment is recommended, we'll book your next appointment, when we'll use a Veinwave stylus - about the size of a small pen - to gently remove your thread veins. There’s no need for a local anaesthetic: some patients compare it to the slight discomfort of having a hair pulled out

Each treatment takes around 30 minutes. As a guide, removing facial thread veins generally requires between 1 and 3 appointments, with a 6-8 week gap recommended between treatments

Treating thread veins in the legs and elsewhere

To treat thread veins in the legs and elsewhere, we often combine the Veinwave technique described above with Micro Sclerotherapy

What to expect

If you're only seeking treatment for thread veins in your legs or feet, you'll start by meeting a specialist doctor at our London thread vein clinic. This initial consultation usually lasts around 30 minutes. Your doctor will make sure you fully understand your treatment options

If treatment is recommended, we'll book your next appointment, when we will probably combine thermal coagulation using Veinwave with Micro Sclerotherapy

During the Veinwave procedure, your surgeon will use a stylus - about the size of a small pen - to gently remove your thread veins. There’s no need for a local anaesthetic: some patients compare it to the slight discomfort of having a hair pulled out

During Micro Sclerotherapy, your surgeon - guided by ultrasound scanning - will inject a saline solution into the thread vein to collapse the vein wall

Each treatment takes around 30 minutes. As a guide, removing thread veins in this way generally requires between 3 and 4 appointments, with a 6-8 week gap recommended between treatments

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose the UK Vein Clinic?

We are the UK's only doctor-led thread vein removal specialists. We offer the best and most effective treatment for this condition, and rigorous standards of care - delivered by vascular clinicians and experts

What should I expect during my visit?

You’ll be seen at our Harley Street clinic by one of our specialist doctors, who’ll conduct a detailed consultation and advise you on your treatment options

Depending on the outcome of this consultation, we’ll book you in for a return visit where we’ll carry out treatment. We only carry out minimally invasive treatments, so you’ll be able to walk in and out the same day

During each treatment session, a specialist doctor will use a Veinwave stylus - about the size of a small pen - to gently remove your thread veins. There’s no need for a local anaesthetic: some patients compare it to the slight discomfort of having a hair pulled out

How long does the treatment take?

Roughly speaking, a typical treatment session will last around 30 minutes. As a guide, while some finer facial thread veins can be removed during just one session, most patients require between 1 and 3 sessions to remove their facial thread veins. Thread veins in the leg and elsewhere may need 3 to 4. We usually recommend a 6 to 8 week wait between each session

Is it painful?

Most patients report only slight discomfort, if any, during the Veinwave procedure (although everyone’s response to treatment and threshold for pain will vary). As some patients have put it, it feels a bit like having a hair pulled out. (It is much less painful than laser treatments.) Occasionally, patients experience some discomfort after their treatment, but this is almost always managed using basic, over-the-counter pain relief

Sclerotherapy, which we may use to treat some thread veins, does not require anaesthetic either. Very well tolerated by the vast majority of patients, it’s a brief injection to close each vein: similar to having a blood test or flu jab

What are the drawbacks of treatment?

We only use non-invasive treatments that minimise the risk of complications and post-op pain. However, all procedures can lead to minor adverse effects such as bruising, redness, and tenderness in the treated area. Some patients find the area feels numb for a few days; others experience some minor discomfort that is usually managed using over-the-counter pain relief. Very occasionally, some patients experience a slight staining of the skin that does not clear up over time

What’s the recovery time after treatment? How soon can I start normal activity again?

You’ll be able to walk out the same day and should be able to resume normal activity immediately. (If you normally wear makeup, we might recommend waiting until the day after facial thread vein treatment before applying any again; we’d also recommend wearing some high-factor suncream if you’re going out in the sunshine afterwards)

I’ve got a pacemaker. Can I still get treatment?

Yes

Is it ok to get treatment if I’m pregnant?

You can have your first consultation, but we may recommend waiting until after the birth to undertake treatment

Is it ok to get treatment if I’m diabetic?

Yes
