Sharing our patient stories is an important part of making sure you know exactly what to expect and whether varicose vein treatment is the right choice for you.
Meet Zoe, a 48-year-old a trained ballet dancer and fitness instructor from Birmingham that has recently chosen to take the next step in her journey to becoming varicose vein free.
Her symptoms included:
· Heaviness and throbbing when standing for long periods
· Itching in warmer temperatures
· Self-consciousness of her veins
Following her pregnancies, Zoe started to notice some darker veins that appeared like bruises which, over time, became more prominent and raised across her leg. Although she lives an active lifestyle, Zoe was aware of the importance of treating her veins before they got any worse. Being conscious of how they appear, what she could and couldn’t wear in the summer was something that often had to be factored into her summer clothing choices.
Both her dad and grandmother suffer with varicose veins, so treating it in good time was important to not only improve the appearance, but also the general health of her veins.
The first part of Zoe’s journey was to have a comprehensive diagnostic assessment, including a duplex ultrasound scan and a consultation with our Vascular Doctor to get a more detailed view of her varicose veins, their source and to develop a plan for treatment.
During this hour-long appointment, Fabrizio D’Abate, our Lead Vascular Scientist scanned both of her legs using a duplex ultrasound scan to identify the veins requiring treatment. This vein mapping demonstrated that her great saphenous vein, a major superficial vein running from the foot to the groin, was incompetent. Instead of effectively transporting blood back to the heart, it allowed blood to flow backward, feeding into side branches and resulting in visible varicose veins.
Following the scan, Zoe met with Dr Nisha Madan, one of our Vascular Doctors to discuss the findings of her scan and confirm her treatment plan. During this part of the appointment, the results were explained in depth, giving Zoe a chance to ask any questions she might have about taking the next step.
Having this one-on-one time with Dr Madan gave Zoe the reassurance she needed, leaving her feeling like she fully understood her options and next steps.
Zoe opted for radiofrequency ablation (RFA), a minimally invasive procedure designed to seal faulty veins using controlled heat. Her treatment was carried out at our Birmingham clinic by Mr Ahmed Shalan, one of our experienced Vascular Consultants.
On arrival, Zoe was welcomed by Mr Shalan, who took time to explain each stage of the procedure in a calm and friendly manner, helping her feel at ease from the outset. Before the treatment began, she was introduced to Lead Nurse Vanessa, who ensured every detail was tailored to Zoe’s preferences—including her choice of classical music to play during the procedure to help her feel relaxed and composed.
As someone who describes herself as naturally anxious, Zoe appreciated the thoughtful, personal touches throughout. “I’m quite a nervous person,” she said, “so holding Vanessa’s hand was a great relief.”
Throughout the treatment, both Vanessa and Mr Shalan checked in regularly, explaining what was happening at each step to keep Zoe fully informed and reassured. After a few small pinches and some gentle pressure, the treatment was underway.
To her surprise, the procedure passed quickly and comfortably—entirely pain-free and carefully centred around her wellbeing from beginning to end.
