NHS insourcing: Even faster vascular clinics in Oxfordshire

UK Vein Clinic has been selected by Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to deliver insourced clinical capacity for varicose vein services, enhancing the Trust’s ability to treat varicose vein patients waiting for extended periods. The collaboration will see UK Vein Clinic clinicians working on Trust premises to provide an innovative high-intensity model of care specifically aimed at reducing the waiting list backlog and improving patient flow in vascular pathways.

On-site consultant-led Vascular service

Under the new contract, UK Vein Clinic will deploy its consultant-led team, and work with local OUH clinicians, to run dedicated vascular scanning and consultation clinics, integrating seamlessly with the Trust’s existing vascular services. Activities will include referral vetting, specialist duplex ultrasound scanning with an accredited vascular scientist, appointments with highly renowned vascular consultants, and expedited pathway planning to ensure patients are directed to the right care at the right time.

“Our tried and tested high-intensity insourcing model is built around sustainable partnerships that deliver measurable capacity quickly and safely, at a discount to existing NHS tariffs”, said Mr Ed Sideso, Consultant Vascular Surgeon, at UK Vein Clinic. “We are honoured to be working with Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to increase their capacity for vascular services for the benefit of patients waiting for extended periods of time. By providing expert scanning and consultations on site, we can ensure patients waiting for varicose vein assessment are seen sooner, in a clinically robust pathway, and supported through their journey with minimal delay.”

Miss Emma Wilton, Consultant Vascular Surgeon from Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust added: “This insourcing partnership with UK Vein Clinic will help us offer one stop clinics to reduce our waiting times to first outpatient appointment with a consultant as well as decrease the waiting times for specialist vascular ultrasound scans. It will reduce unnecessary follow ups and additional hospital visits for patients therefore also allowing us to indirectly increase capacity without compromising on clinical quality. Bringing additional focused resource onto our sites means patients can expect faster initial assessment and clearer next steps, which is essential for driving down waiting times and improving outcomes.”

Key features of the initiative include:

  • On-site, trust-based delivery of vascular scanning and consultations by UK Vein Clinic’s vascular specialist.
  • Referral vetting to prioritise clinical need and optimise utilisation of surgical capacity.
  • Use of duplex ultrasound to accurately assess venous disease and stratify patients rapidly.
  • Integrated, consultant-led pathway design to reduce delays between assessment and definitive management.
  • Close collaboration with Trust teams to ensure continuity and safety of care.

The insourcing programme is part of UK Vein Clinic’s broader NHS support offering, delivered through both insourcing and outsourcing models depending on Trust need. UK Vein Clinic is an approved supplier on the NHS SBS Insourcing of Clinical Services Framework and participates in the Digital Mutual Aid System (DMAS), enabling compliant, agile deployment of additional clinical capacity where pressure is greatest.
