The Top 5 Medical Services In Manchester

From major hospitals to private clinics, Manchester boasts a huge number of world-class medical services. Although most of these are dotted around the city, some of the very best can all be found under one roof: the Pall Mall clinic on King’s Street.

The clinic offers a variety of services from GP consultations to specialists, all available in a discreet and relaxed environment. Here are five of the best services you can find at the clinic – or indeed, anywhere in Manchester.

Vascular Treatment

Offered by the UK Vein Clinic, this service can help with a number of vein-related issues. These include the treatment of varicose veins or spider veins (also known as reticular veins). Varicose veins are not only unsightly, which can cause self-consciousness, but can also lead to aches, pains, swelling and more serious complications.

The UK Vein Clinic offers ‘duplex’ scanning, which goes much deeper than just seeing varicose veins on the surface. This scan can show the health of the deep vein system, which may have an effect on the treatment of the superficial veins closer to the surface.

Treatment may involve thermal ablation or sclerotherapy. Both procedures are minimally-invasive and quick to recover from. Thermal ablation is performed under local anaesthetic and involves inserting a probe into the affected vein. The probe applies thermal energy to cause the blood to clot, effectively blocking the vein to any further blood flow. Sclerotherapy is a different method for essentially the same effect.

Also performed under local anaesthetic, sclerotherapy involves injecting a small amount of foam into the vein which damages the vein wall, once again blocking it off. For larger veins the clinic also offers avulsion (micro-phlebectomy), which involves making a number of small incisions down the leg to remove small portions of the vein.

Skin Clinic

Dermatological conditions can be a major cause of stress and social anxiety, and can even be painful. The Pall Mall clinic has a number of specialist Dermatologists who can help with issues such as acne, rosacea, eczema and psoriasis. Taking care of your skin is not just a matter of appearance: issues like untreated eczema can lead to skin infections, while severe acne can lead to scarring.

The specialists at the clinic go beyond treatment by helping you understand the cause of your skin problem. This will help you and the specialist determine the best course of treatment, Because each patient and condition is different, your dermatologist will always create a bespoke treatment just for you. This may range from simple skin care routines to topical treatments (such as steroids) or systemic treatments (such as antibiotics).

Issues like acne scarring to sun damage can also be treated, while checking for inflammatory skin disease and conducting mole assessments and skin cancer detection.

Rhinoplasty

Nose surgery, also known as a ‘nose job’, can reshape, restructure and redefine the nose while removing or changing any unwanted ridges or bumps. The nose is one of the most defining facial features, which is why this is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the world.

At the Pall Mall clinic, expert facial and ENT consultants will talk you through what you would like to achieve from the surgery, whether that's amending the tip, bridge, alar base or dorsal hump. Consultations are free, and you can see your chosen surgeon as many times as you wish before booking your surgery.

The surgery itself is performed under general anaesthetic and usually takes around one and a half to three hours. Recovery takes a number of weeks, patients are advised to stay away from social situations for a couple of weeks to avoid catching a cold, and strenuous activity should be avoided for four to six weeks. Over those six weeks patients will check in three times with either their surgeon or a nurse to make sure that the recovery is progressing smoothly.

Liposuction

As much as many of us try our best with diet and exercise, it can be difficult to shift some stubborn fat deposits. This can especially be the case around the abdomen, love handles, outer or inner thighs, legs or arms. This is where liposuction, or simply ‘lipo’, can help us out. Liposuction is often misunderstood as a weight-loss procedure or a treatment for obesity. Rather, it is a way of removing particular deposits of fat and should be seen as a compliment to regular exercise and good diet, not the replacement of a healthy lifestyle.

This treatment is performed under general anaesthetic and takes between one and three hours, depending on the amount of fat being removed. There may be some swelling for the first one or two weeks after the procedure, but most patients can see the effects after three or four weeks. All patients are encouraged to check back in with the clinic three times over the six weeks following the procedure, while they also have access to a 24/7 direct contact line with a nurse if they have any other concerns.

Scanning & Diagnostic Imaging

The Pall Mall clinic offers medical tests, scans, diagnostics and imaging for a variety of specialist areas. These tools are used to help diagnose issues or physical symptoms, as well as screening for reassurance of any medical concerns such as cancer. The clinic is open six days a week, and test results are usually available within three to five working days.

The state-of-the-art technology at the clinic can map out muscular and nervous systems, provide brain scans, identify broken bones and monitor pregnancies. Some of the available tests include x-rays, MRI scans, CT scans, mammographies, medical ultrasounds and more. The results of these tests can be shared with the clinic's specialist consultants to advise on which next steps, if any, are required. There is no need to get a referral from your NHS GP for any of these diagnostic tests or scans.
